A Room of One Zone

1988

Wood and plaster. 9 x 3 x 3 feet.

In her 1928 essay, Virginia Woolf wrote, "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." This sculpture presents an apartment tower with nine chambers on each of the 8 floors - no doors or windows. Each room contains a single wooden chair, suggesting solitary scribblers inhabiting the blank white pages of their monastic cells.
